GAA/ Functional Academics

Georgia Alternate Assessment (GAA) is a portfolio of student work that allows participants to show progress and achievements they have made in skills aligned to the Georgia Performance Standards. Each student in their junior year will complete this. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004(IDEA) and the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001(NCLB) say that all students have access to the state's academic content stadards and curriculum.

Functional Academics is an important area for our students to be able to write and recognize their own name, recognize the meaning of various signs, compute the amount needed at a grocery store, and learn about the history of their county.

My class also participates in Community-Based Instruction(CBI) which allows my students to interact in the community in various job-based activities to improve their social and job skills in real-world areas.  We also stress personal lifestyle management and daily living skills in class.
